Introduction to Deities

A deity is a divine being that people honour, worship, or connect with as part of their spiritual or religious beliefs. Deities can take many forms and are found in traditions all around the world, often being associated with different aspects of nature, life, or human experience.

The role of deities in one’s practice;

  • Teacher: Sharing wisdom, knowledge, and lessons to help us grow.

  • Protectors: Offering support, strength, and a sense of safety.

  • Guides: Helping us find direction and navigate different parts of life.

  • Sources Of Inspiration: Encouraging creativity, self-discovery, and personal growth.

How to Choose a Deity?

Choosing a deity is a personal process based on research, intuition, and what resonates with you. Deity work is completely optional, and you can practice witchcraft without worshipping any deity. If you do want to work with one, you don’t have to wait for a dramatic “divine calling” because you can choose to reach out yourself.

Start by exploring different pantheons, such as Greek, Roman, Norse, Celtic, Egyptian, or Slavic traditions. If it feels meaningful to you, you can also explore your own ancestry and cultural history. Try to read myths, folklore, and historical sources rather than relying only on social media, and learn about a deity’s full story, including their strengths and flaws.

Think about what you want to bring into your life. You might choose a deity connected to qualities, values, or areas you’re currently working on, such as love, confidence, protection, creativity, wisdom, or nature. Your interests and lifestyle can also help guide you.

You may notice recurring signs, such as certain animals, names, symbols, dreams, or themes appearing repeatedly. A strong feeling of curiosity or connection can also be worth exploring, but don’t feel like every coincidence has to be a message.

When you’re ready, start simply. Create a small sacred space, light a candle, introduce yourself, and explain why you’re interested in connecting. You can leave an offering such as water, food, coffee, honey, or incense, or offer something devotional like studying their lore, writing, creating art, or performing an act in their honour.

Remember that relationships with deities can develop differently for everyone. If you receive no response or the connection doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to step back and try something else. You can also work with more than one deity, and your practice may change over time. Most importantly, research and respect cultural boundaries, especially with closed traditions that require specific ancestry, initiation, or training.
